Learned a lot last time and *this* time I'm going to have a sighting widget mounted on it so I can get a little closer to one of the 'designated' targets, heh. Have been noodling on this problem a bit and am now building a really silly looking thing that may or may not work. I'm using 1/4" steel pipe to make a sighting tube, but to spare my neck and back I've put a kink in it; i.e. I've welded two pieces at right angles, then sawed the back of the joint open. I've tried putting a first surface mirror on this opening and, sure enough, I can see around the corner. Pretty funky tho and would like to know of what others have done. Any takers?

-Aiming ain't trivial when the ground is sloping in two axes
-Ramrods should be a constant diameter, just in case (no, it didn't happen!)

I'm thinking letters that are 3-5 feet tall, and burn with a steady orange-ish (blue-ish would be ok too, but far less cool) flame at night. Fuel source would preferably be propane.

I've thought about modifying gas grill burners to fit them into a trough of sorts, but I'm not sure how well the propane would spread over that sort of distance.

another option I've looked at would just be steel pipe bent to form the letters, with holes drilled every 1/2 inch to make small gas jets. Also not sure if the flame would spread enough with this...

Whatever the burners turn out to be, they'd probably be mounted in some sort of steel trough to try and dissipate the heat.

Oh, and this whole contraption will hopefully be a 10-12 feet off the ground, so people can walk under it. (I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse...)

Tribe of fellow dangerous hobbyists,

I just completed the move, and I can now start working with fire and sharp things again. I need to bounce ideas off a few people, and maybe have someone help with a wrench or a torch. Anybody here in the NYC 75 mile radius?

Wires from it are attached thru holes in an up-ended plastic film can cap. Spritz explosive vapors into the can (the guy who showed me this was using Binaca breath spray; it smells vile once ignited!), attach can to lid and press trigger. Neat!
